The seafloor is an essential part of the ocean’s ecosystem. If mooring balls are not properly installed, they can drag on the ground and disrupt the plant and animal life that require an undisturbed bottom.
There is a significant problem with the abandonment of ships on the British Columbia coastline. Ships can be seen washed up on the shore for long periods of time without being removed and without boat owners being responsible for their actions.
The most important thing is that boat owners take responsibility for their actions and are aware of the harm that their boat and mooring systems can potentially do to the environment if proper protocols are not followed.
The WAHVA (Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act) is the Canadian mandate to take appropriate actions of problem vessels. Under this Act, you may not abandon, cause the vessel to become a wreck, or sink the vessel. The government can order owners to take initiative to control this. Non-compliance penalties can start at $25,000 and range up to $250,000.
